Bulldogs
This was my fourth breed appointment of the year, and currently the most northern! Thank you to all the exhibitors that attended, also the Northumberland & Durham Bulldog Club for supporting the entry and finally the show’s officers, committee and stewards for hosting such a ‘busy’ and successful show. I would like to take this opportunity to remind exhibitors of the Kennel Club Code of Conduct and highlight that contacting judges before a show they are due to judge, asking for their opinion of entered dogs is not acceptable behaviour. You enter under a judge, as does anyone else, to find their opinion of your dog and their merit within the competition on the day of the show, not before!

Junior (0,0) Post Graduate (1,1) Open (3,1)
Thank you to the exhibitors that entered and attended it was much appreciated given there was a Bulldog Breed Open Show on the same day and within 40miles. I was very impressed with the puppy class, and every dog exhibited had the desired extra length of tail and split nose roll.
Puppy (3,0)
Thank you to the committee for asking me to judge these two breeds, the show seemed to have a very friendly atmosphere. No doubt a reflection on the committee and officers, who were very hospitable. Thank you to the exhibitors that had a very long wait for their classes, and in very cold conditions! Unfortunately my Bulldog Best Puppy in Breed winner left before I could award them the title!
Boston & District Canine Society Champ Show Bulldog – 9th January 2011
Thank you to the exhibits that entered and showed. Unfortunately 2 dogs missed their class due to traffic delays enroute. I was very pleased with the quality and overall health of the dogs, none carried any excessive weight and all had the correct pear body shape. Puppy Dog (0,0) Junior Dog (3,2)
Thank you to the officers and committee asking me to judge this show, and for their kind hospitality and gifts. My only comment, once again, is on grooming standards. A short coated breed isn’t difficult to keep clean and tidy. Many would have benefited from a good brush to clean the coat, strip the dead fur and simulate some natural oils to improve coat quality. I also observed dirty nose rolls and wet facial wrinkles. Poor grooming really can leave a bad impression. Other then that, I was very happy with the quality of the dogs exhibited today, and all principle winners were groomed to a very good standard.
French Bulldogs
I was informed that numbers were down for this show overall, due to the date clash with SKC. All my attended entries were male, so there were no awards for Bitches. What I lacked in numbers I didn’t in quality! My BOB was awarded RBIS, and my BP awarded BPIS. Thank you to the exhibitors that attended and to the hospitable ring stewards.
It was a pleasure to be asked to judge at this canine association as the judges are not selected by the committee, many are nominated by breed councils having won the majority between all umbrella breed clubs. Entry was down but to be expected being an Easter weekend with a Breed Club Open show the following day and then a Breed Club Centenary Championship show the day after! I’m pleased to say that I was one of three that attended all 3 shows, I’m not sure if that’s dedication or stupidity? You decide.
Being asked to judge on your home turf, for such a highly regarded breed club to say was a pleasure, would be an understatement. Thank you to the officers and committee for asking me to attend this appointment. Thank you for well run and organised show something we come to expect as the ‘norm’ from this prestigious club. Thank you to my superb ringside assistance by the committee. In this hobby we all have personal milestones and this was for me, it will be cherished for many years to come.
BULLDOG – BITCHES
Firstly I would like to thank the Hon Sec Ann Lunt for showing flexibility and initiative by offering two C list judges the option of fulfilling an appointment which is normally offered to a B list judge, and the committee for a well run show. Split sex judging is something only normally offered on the rarity at breed champ shows in our breed, I hope the exhibitors enjoyed the experience as much as I did. Thanks also to the ring stewards Cath Rodgers and her son. I found overall exhibits clean, and in good condition with fairly toned bodies. All eyes were clear, but found width of jaw lacking in general. Handlers could also benefit by reducing the length of lead when moving their dogs to ensure they make the most of their dog’s movement in a purposeful direction. |
