General Bulldog Information

In this section, I've covered several common questions regarding the Breed. It's important to note that a wealth of more relevant and insightful information about this breed is available through the LaRoyal email list, which you can join using the link below.

You'll also find relevant information in the 🗞️Dog Diary blog by filtering the search category 'Breed Info' or by clicking here.
How much exercise do they need?
A full grown, adult bulldog will require 20-40 minutes exercise per day. You should incrementally increase a puppy's exercise time until it reaches the limit.  Bulldogs are not a race dog (as I'm sure your aware!), they are a cart horse.  Bulldogs should never be exercised in the heat of the day, the pace should steady but not terribly brisk. Pay attention to coat colour, a dark brindle dog will overheat more quickly then a lighter dog.

How much do they eat when fully grown?
The breed standard states bulldogs should be between 22-25kg (50-55lb). Most males will run slightly heavier. They are classed as a large dog even thought they are only approx 36cm tall, but with a very high body mass index! If feeding dry complete adult food give around 285-395 grams a day, normally split in to 2 meals when fully grown.

Do they bark much?
Bulldogs will not bark unless alerted or disturbed.

Are they good with children and other pets?
Bulldogs are companion dogs, so they love human attention! So much so, they will follow you room to room, they want to be wherever you are! This means they love kids as, of course, they are always the most willing to give them lots of hugs and kisses! Bulldogs are also fine with other pets/animals when introduced from a young age.
What's a good breed book to buy?
We've found many books that are a good resource and recommend:
  • The Bulldog Bible by Tania Holmes (Bulldog Rescue)
  • Bulldogs: An Owner's Companion by Christian Bruton
  • The Pet Owner's Guide to the Bulldog by Judith Daws
Alternatively you an loan these books from our personal library.

What regular grooming do they need?
A Bulldog has a short/fine coat that sheds moderately.  They require grooming at least once a week but no trimming is necessary. Daily care of tearstains and wrinkles is needed. Sensitive baby wipes or diluted Hibiscrub can be used to clean, kitchen roll to dry and either Lanacane  powder and Athletes foot  cream to sooth (alternate often).
